Our Mission
We are a public-private partnership creating effective programs that give young
people the resources they need to be safe, successful and drug-free. The Partnership
has a 14-year track record of accomplishment, developing more than 2,300 new prevention
programs that use mentoring, parent education, school support, youth leadership,
media and community coalitions to protect our young people. On an annual basis,
we serve 13,000 - 17,000 constituents in schools, colleges, community organizations,
businesses, police departments and municipal governments, supporting prevention
programs that impact young people all across Connecticut.
Why We Need Your Help
While we have seen reductions in substance abuse and violence across our state,
demand for our programs and services continues to grow. Each generation brings
new challenges to address and overcome.
- Marijuana and heroin use are once again on an upswing, while the allure of Ecstasy seduces vulnerable Connecticut high school and college students to try what they believe is a harmless drug.
- Underage drinkers account for 20% of the alcohol consumed in Connecticut, and at 11 years old, their average age of first use is 1 year lower than the national average.
- Eighty to ninety percent of 4th through 12th graders report being targeted in bullying incidents at some point in their lives, with up to 22% experiencing academic difficulties as a result.
- More than 140,000 Connecticut schoolchildren could benefit from the guiding hand of a caring adult mentor while less than 10,000 mentors are currently in place.
- Most significantly, parents who talk to their children about drug and alcohol abuse decrease the chance their child will abuse these substances by 50%. Yet, less than 30% of parents report having these conversations with their children on a regular basis.
Your Donation Makes a Difference
Connecticut's young people face significant challenges in today's world. The dangers of drug abuse and violence can methodically claim a child ...a community ...a generation. Here at The Governor's Prevention Partnership, we are committed to continuing to do our part to make Connecticut a great place to live, work and raise a family. We need your help in this important effort.
