MISSION & HISTORY
Mission
Working closely with Connecticut's colleges and universities, the Campus Program
seeks to promote alcohol and other drug prevention programs appropriate for this
unique educational and developmental environment. Through trainings and technical
assistance, we encourage an environmental approach to prevention; stressing the
importance of individual, campus, and campus/community level programs. In addition
to working directly with campuses, the Campus Program maintains close ties with
many state and national agencies, such as the CT state Departments of Higher Education,
Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Higher Education Center.
History
Since the creation of The Governor's Prevention Partnership in 1989, campus prevention has been an important component of our work. Alcohol and other drug use results in many of the most serious academic, personal safety and legal problems for our college and university students. In order to keep our students safe and successful we must address this issue in a collaborative and coordinated way. Our Campus program ensures that the prevention of the abuse of alcohol and other drugs remains a priority of our leadership, student life and campus health promotion programs. Currently the work is funded by the State Incentive Grant awarded to the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Past funding has included the U.S. Department of Education, FIPSE, and the National College Athletic Association.
Goals
To provide technical assistance and training opportunities in order to build
the capacity of Connecticut's institutions of higher learning to implement effective
alcohol and other drug prevention programs
To work towards creating a supportive environment for campuses to practice effective
prevention
To expand support and resources dedicated to alcohol and other drug prevention
on college and university campuses
